Acer Laptop Memory

A laptop is a miniature version of a desktop. This is because everything is already there allowing the user to carry it around. If your Acer laptop is performing slowly, its possible that the hard drive is almost full. If this is the case, you should free some space by deleting some old files or upgrading your Acer laptop memory.

The standard Acer laptop has about 40GB of memory in its hard drive. As programs need more space, computer designers have made this bigger by making 80 and 120 GB hard drives commercially available.

Upgrading the memory is very easy. If you bough it from Acer itself, you can be referred to a vendor that will be able to replace the old one with a hard drive that has more memory.

But there are not that many people who like the idea because of concerns such as warranty issues and compatibility problems.

It is easy to say that simply using genuine parts and getting this from a reputable source can avoid these problems. If you bought the laptop from the same dealer, surely they would have parts and accessories that can accommodate your request.

Those that have experience taking apart an Acer laptop can just order the part and then do it at home. You should be careful not to ground yourself or tinker with the other parts because these are very sensitive.

If after upgrading the memory, your laptop is still running slowly, there is one more thing you have to fix and that is your RAM or random access memory. Although the standard these days is 256MB, new programs these days require something higher so you should get one that is either 512MB or 1GB.

Another thing to keep in mind is the fact that there are different types of RAM. Laptops after 2004 use SDRAM or Synchronous Dynamic RAM. The newest one that came out is called DDR2 SDRAM or Dynamic Random Access Memory. The difference here is the speed to which a program can run since SDRAM operates at 150 to 160 MHz while DDR moves at 200MHz.

You don’t have to dissect the laptop to find out if this is compatible or not. This information is written in the owner’s manual so you just have to read it. It should tell you if your Acer laptop is still using SDRAM or DDRAM.

If you are using SDRAM, you cannot simply switch to one that has DDR because the two are very different. This means you may have to change this to in order for it work.

Installing DDR will make your laptop run faster. You have to keep in mind though that the other parts of your Acer unit were not designed for this so this may cause problems later on.

One example could be the memory of your video or the graphics card. Upgrading without looking at how it will affect this may give your problems such as poor display resolution and color depth.

Upgrading your Acer laptop memory is not that easy as you may think. Upgrading the memory may force you to do the same for the other parts and if the estimate is almost the same as a new unit, perhaps you should just sell the it and buy a new one.
